Self-awareness is a core foundation of personal development and self-leadership. It means understanding who you are, why you think and act the way you do, and how you interact with the world around you. When self-awareness grows, confidence, self-leadership, and decision-making improve naturally. This is an inside job that shows externally.
Here we will focus on the following sub topics of Self-awareness that includes understanding. These are some key topics within self-awareness that are commonly explored in psychology, coaching, and leadership development.
1. Emotional Awareness
Understanding and identifying your emotions. You can learn to manage your feelings when you notice how your feelings shifts. You learn on what feelings you act upon and what feelings you don’t act out. You learn to recognise and name the feelings objectively. You also need to understand emotional triggers (we have another recent blog post about triggers to read). Learn emotional regulation through breathing and also exercise to get rid of anxiety with the help of adrenaline and other useful tools.
2. Values Awareness
You need to find out your values to know who you truly are. By journaling (we have another blog post about journaling) you can brain storm and write down what comes to your mind to kind of empty your thoughts in a note book for two weeks as a project. Journal what comes to your mind to find out what takes up your thinking ability. After some time you will se a pattern and repeated thoughts. Categorise in topics of sense of freedom, honesty, security, growth, etc. Identify possible value conflicts to be able to live in alignment with values. Make decision-making based on your decided values. Ask yourself: “Does this choice align with the kind of person I want to be?” Make adjustment to live in alignment with your values.
3. Strengths Awareness
Identify your strengths what you naturally are doing well. Some is natural talents and others are skills developed over time. Also identify situations where you perform best and what energizes you. Ask yourself: “When do I feel most confident and capable? What do and have people complimented me about?”
4. Weaknesses & Growth Areas
Understanding your weaknesses or limitations without self-judgment. Identify your Blind spots, Skill gaps and Behavioural patterns. Ask yourself: “What skills do I need to improve if I practiced it regularly? And also what is a waste of my time to even try to be good at?” Don’t invest time or energy on areas that someone else can be good at. No-one is good at everything and do not need to be.
Recognise what activates your strong reactions and learn how to Not act upon them. Avoid Defensive behaviours and learn about how Past experiences have influenced your past reactions to learn how to act moving forward. Ask yourself: “Why does this situation affect me so strongly?”
5. Identity & Self-Concept
Identify how you see yourself. Identify your Self-image, Roles you act as a leader, parent, creator, etc. and where you play these roles. Identify your Authentic self vs. social expectations and decide your role in different social arenas ans situations. Ask yourself: “Is this who I really am, or who I think I should be?”
6. Beliefs & Mindsets
Identify the mental frameworks that guide your actions. Where do Limiting beliefs come up and where or when do you feel empowered. Do you acknowledge that you can grow as a person and in what areas? What is your Cultural influences that you think you need to adapt to and what is just imagined. What is your Personal assumptions about success, money, relationships?
Ask yourself: “What belief might be holding me back?”
7. Behavioural Patterns
Identify and learn to understand how you tend to act repeatedly. Identify your Habits, Automatic reactions, your Coping mechanisms and your Decision-making style. Ask yourself: “Do I avoid difficult tasks or face them directly?”
8. Social Awareness & Impact on Others
Understanding how your behaviour affects people. Where do you want to show Empathy? What is your Communication style? How are your Listening skills? How is your Leadership presence, and in what areas? Decide on your Reputation and perception. Ask yourself: “How might others experience me in this situation?” By building yourself strong you will know without being too worried and you will act according to your values.
9. Purpose & Direction
Understand your deeper motivations. What is your Life purpose? What are your Long-term goals? What is Meaningful work to you? What is your Personal mission? How do you practise Legacy thinking? Ask yourself: “What kind of life am I building?”
